A note from the president
On November 16, 2007 Toccoa Falls College School of Business hosted an event where Truett Cathy spoke. As most of us know he is the founder of Chick-fil-A restaurant chain. I found Mr. Cathy, at age 84, to be informative, inspirational and humorous.
The history of this company is unique. He has worked to live and practice his faith values in respect to all of those his business touches. Even at the meeting we were attending, we were told that he did not charge at all to come. All he asked is that we give to others that God has entrusted to his care. Each attendee was given gifts from the company and encouraged to live a life with values in mind.
I think beyond the basics of good business, treating his employees well, creating healthy and enjoyable eating experiences for his customers, he shared three basic concepts as to how he has influenced those in his organization. He said that we guide those we are responsible for by Instruction, Influence and Image. He noted that Instruction is what we say, Influence is what we do, and Image is who we are. It takes all three to effectively lead.
He was quoted as saying, “If you wish to enrich days, plant flowers: If you wish to enrich years, plant trees: If you wish to enrich eternity, plant ideals….”
Concerning his work ethic he said that if you can make your work fun then you don’t have to work at all. In respect to himself he said (at age 84) that he did not plan to retire until after 100. He said rumor has it not many people die after age 100.
I, personally, was inspired by Mr. Cathy’s ideals and actions. I hope those around me will see his leadership in my life.
