Making Side Rails

 

Cut your stock to size for your side rail, then trace the Bed Hanger centered on the ends of the rail.

The mortise for the hardware can be cut out several different ways. One way is with a small hand router (often called a laminate trimmer). When using this method, it will be necessary to use one that has a fence attachment. Another way to cut it is with a hand chisel. In either case, the thickness of the hanger should equal the depth of the mortise.

Check to see which sides looks better. These are the top and outside edges. You will want to attach the hardware with the hooks pointing down (away from the top).

Cut a sturdy piece of wood to use for a \"cleat.\" This will be what holds the box spring in place. Be sure to cut it slightly shorter than the side rail. Apply the glue as needed.

Insert the slotted bed hanger into the mortise in the post, making sure that the slots in the hardware are closest to the top. Click on the picture for an explanation. Screw the hardware into the mortise.

Hang the side rails onto the posts as shown.

We have found a rubber mallet works well for seating the side rail into the post.
