bitts are standard drill bitts, paddle bitts and brad point bitts.
For this application any of these bitts would work equally well.
The first step is to drill a 1/4 wide hole through the bottom
of your bun foot; where the bottom of the hole is 1 from
the top of the bun foot leaving 1 of material between the
flat surface and the bottom of the hole.
A second 1/8 widehole will be drilled through the remainder of
the bun foot. In this situation we are using 2 ½
#8 screws. The screws will drive into your piece nearly 1 ¾
allowing for some compression. If the bottom of your piece is
less than 1 ¼ thick you may want to use a shorter
screw.
Using a drill with a square drive screw the 2 ½
#8 screw through the bun foot into the piece.
