4 inch Square Apple Foot

"Teacher's Pet." That is what we used to say to all the kids back at the "Old School" who brought the teacher an apple. Well, this cute little Apple Foot might make the teacher take a second glance. You see, this foot is not round, and although it's about the same size as a real apple, it has a few different characteristics. The 4" Square Apple Foot comes in a variety of species of wood, and rumor has it that it supports the weight of a chest, cupboard, or chair a little better than a real apple would.

4 1/2 inch Square Bridle Foot

4 1/2 inch Square Bridle Foot, from the Square Feet line #4076 (4 1/2 x 3 7/8)

Since most consider the word bridle to mean 'a harness', one might conclude that the two concave lines on our Square Bridle Foot are emulating a bridle of sorts. Or if you are more comfortable with the definition of bridle being 'to harness', then the furniture in place to not let it drift into oblivion. Maybe you like the more obscure definition of 'bridle' being to move quickly as in "This Bridle Foot with its delicate little pads underneath its strong midsection appears to allow my creation to gently glide across the room with the slight touch of a finger." Whatever definition you subscribe to, the Square Bridle Foot may be just the right foot to add that extra dimension to your most cherished item.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what if the doctor that I made a beautiful cherry desk for asked for Square Apple Feet on his desk? Huh, how about them apples? Well, it turns out that this surgeon loves the shape of the apples, but he wanted his desk in his personal office at home to have a more comfortable look; so he chose the Square Apple Foot. The Cherry wood made this desk one of class and the envy of his other doctor friends (I hope to sell them all custom-made desks).

5 Inch Tapered Square Foot

I remember when my father bought the new television/hi-fi sometime back in the 1960's. I used to lay on the floor and look up at the color picture. We finally had a color TV!! The beautiful mahogany cabinet had grille cloth covering the speakers that looked like it was woven with glitter thread, and at the bottom was a 5-inch Tapered Foot. We thought this was the grooviest thing we had ever seen. Isn't it funny how times change, and yet remain the same? Today, that little 5-inch Tapered Foot is back and stronger than ever.

After taking the time to make my own Tapered Square Foot for a retro entertainment center a couple of years ago, I realized it was time to look for them already made. Have you ever tried to taper something that short? Have you ever tried to keep your hands out of the saw blade? After my last attempt found one of the leg blanks launched across the workshop and landing in the dog's bed, I said "No more! "It is time to find a source." Thankfully, the pros at Osborne Wood Products are set up to do this kind of thing on a regular basis. Kaydee, my Labrador Retriever, will appreciate not being run out of her bed again.

It is rare that something so small as this little 4" Square Tapered Foot can add so much to a piece of furniture. When I made a small trunk a while back, I found that this little foot was the absolute best thing to boost the height of this trunk and turn it into a masterpiece. Who would have believed that so much change could come from just adding these feet to something so mundane? I was impressed. And all it took was four little 4" Square Tapered Feet from Osborne Wood Products.

10 Inch Two Sided Taper

10 Inch Two Sided Taper, from the Square Feet line #6151 (10 x 2 3/4)

In this retro age where everything is going back to the styling of the 1950's and 60's, we discover that some styles which we thought were so 'hip' back then have actually come full circle. When you look at the styles of the 'in-crowd' designer shops today, they are full of items where the furniture case is sitting on four 2-sided tapered feet. Now that old credenza Mom has looks new again.

8 Inch Two Sided Taper Leg

8 Inch Two Sided Taper Leg, from the Square Feet line #6146 (8 x 2 3/4)

It's been a long time since the 2-sided tapered foot was in vogue. The art deco period was directly overlayed onto the Craftsman or Mission period. Designers like Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright were instrumental in the furniture and styling of that time. While it was a little slow to catch on back in the 1950's, it became a little more accepted in the 1960's. Today, we find ourselves yearning to use these 8 inch 2-sided Tapered Feet as much as we can. Maybe we want to bring back a simpler time, reflecting the fun of our childhood.

6 Inch Two Sided Taper

6 Inch Two Sided Taper, from the Square Feet line #6141 (6 x 2 3/4)

When I look at 2-sided tapered feet, I always think they look funny. But, you know what? When they are placed on a piece of furniture they look really cool. It always amazes me that the individual parts of something can look so out of place, but then all placed together they make perfect sense and look great. I was making a little side chest the other day, and I struggled with what to use as feet. I tried several bun feet, a built up Ogee base, and yet, nothing seemed to work. I had even moved some 6 inch 2-sided tapered feet out of the way - discounting them immediately - to get to my stash of bun feet. But nothing looked right. Just out of curiosity, I put one of the tapers underneath the chest. Voila! It was exactly what I needed. Who knew?
