About Acanthus Leaf Corbels

Acanthus leaves call to mind the distinguished beauty of the Greco-Roman era; where their graceful forms detailed the capitals on massive columns, stone carvings and statues, and other architectural accents of the day. While the use of corbels of stone does date back to this era, the use of wooden corbels did not come about until the Victorian Age. As the architecture of personal residences changed to require a need for this type of support, something that was previously inaccessible was now available to public citizens. Carvings in wood, though less costly than stone sculptures, were certainly no less breathtaking. This transition enabled the ability of today's modern citizen to bring the grace and beauty of grand architectural structures into his own home.

The painstaking detail of these hand-carved masterpieces still evokes the same sense of wonder now as they have throughout centuries past. With an elegant and graceful air about them, it is no surprise that acanthus leaves remain one of the most prominent stylistic choices for decorative corbels. Whether buttressing the shelves of a stately library, or lending their support to overhangs on kitchen islands and counters, acanthus leaf corbels are a wonderful structural and decorative accent.

Offering corbels in several different sizes, all aptly named after various cities in Europe, Osborne makes it easy to unite the elements of a room under one theme, or even to coordinate multiple rooms in one home or office. From island height corbels which are perfect for everything from kitchen cabinets to fireplace mantels, to smaller corbels that exude elegance while supporting range hoods and smaller overhangs; these beautifully carved corbels will easily find a home in your next design. As if such versatility in size and application were not enough, many of these corbels are also available in ten wood types; including the ever popular choices of Hard Maple, Cherry, Oak, and Alder.
