Osborne Builder's Studio: DIY Mantel Clock

Mantel Clock Instructions:
Step 1
Plane the 5/4 Beechwood project lumber down to about 1/2” thick for a smooth, even surface. Cut the lumber to your desired height for the clock body; around 7” works well for most clock inserts.
Step 2
Measure the distance between the tabs on the back of your clock insert, then find the center of the board. Use a compass to trace a circle for the insert opening, drill starter holes inside the circle, and cut it out with a jigsaw. Test-fit the insert and refine the cut as needed.
Step 3
Cut the side pieces to match the height of the front panel, trimming the width if you want a slimmer profile. Miter each corner at a 45° angle for clean, tight joints.
Step 4
Use the painter’s tape method to assemble the box. Apply wood glue to each mitered edge, fold the sides together, and secure them with tape to ensure proper alignment while the glue dries.
Step 5
While the box is drying, cut the moulding pieces for the top and bottom trim at 45° angles. Attach each piece using wood glue and a pin nailer, keeping the seams flush.
Step 6
Cut a top piece from the remaining Beechwood, leaving about a 1/2”reveal on all sides. Add a small roundover to the top edges for a smooth finish, then attach it using wood glue and pin nails or clamps.
Step 7
Once the glue has dried, sand the entire clock smooth and apply your preferred stain or finish. When dry, insert the clock mechanism into the cutout.
