Lessons on Filling Out Applications

Filed under: Daily Life at Osborne, Osborne in the community — Mary Beth @ 12:53 pm

Today we had school buses stop by the shop.

A bunch of middle schoolers came to learn how to fill out applications, and they went on a tour of the shop as well.

Since there were so many kids, the conference room wasn’t large enough, so they went and met in the racquetball court.

Dad spoke with them about how to fill out an application, what companies are looking for when they look at the application (or at least what we look for), and tips on how to fill out an application well. Then they get to fill out an application, and it gets graded by our grading system.

Different people in the shop gave the tour, each of them showing the kids their area of expertise. I believe the tour guides included Jason, Denise, Will, my dad Leon, and I believe Ashley has contributed a lot to this as well.

Bird House

There once was a bird house…

It was placed on top of a leg. A leg from Osborne Wood Products Inc. It was painted nice and pretty.

My Aunt is creative, and she made this birdhouse. Its just one neat thing that someone has done with one of our products. She and some of her friends, I believe, make the bird houses. But this particular one she gave to us, and you can see it on our porch if you stop by!

Show Prep and New Employee

Filed under: Daily Life at Osborne, Shows — Mary Beth @ 3:43 pm

Well, today Christian is back in the shop, preparing for a AWFS show which is coming up on July 18th. Its going to be in Las Vegas. Christian, Sherry, her husband Anthony, and my dad Leon will be going. Dad and Christian were discussing stuff about corbels and Christian is getting caught up with everything which has changed since he worked here full time.

And Jason is teaching the new lady, her name is Cindy and she will be working in the office (The picture below is Cindy).  Its great to have another person on the force to answer phones! It can get pretty crazy with 4 lines! And we don’t want anyone to have to speak to our lovely answering machine. So now we have TWO Cindy’s. Cindy had to tell Cindy something… and it was very strange to hear her saying her own name. If we didn’t know better we probably would start thinking she was talking to herself! hehe.

Shop Tour

Filed under: Daily Life at Osborne, Osborne in the community — Mary Beth @ 4:18 pm

Today we had a tour. There is a local Christian college called Toccoa Falls College about 15 minutes away from us, and some business people from Brazil are visiting the United States to learn English. Last year one of them came to the states and received Christ as his Savior and Lord. So when he and some business people came this year, the pastor of the church at Toccoa Falls decided they should see a Christian business, so they came here for a tour.

Dad starts off in the conference room telling them a bit about the history of the company, and also how it is built on Christ as its foundation.

Then the tour moves out into the shop to see how things are made. Its really pretty neat.

Another neat thing about the tour was that it brought along with it… Christian!!!

Back before this blog was started, Christian worked in the office answering phones. Then he moved from the office out into production. Then he moved on. Sort-of. He’ll still go to shows and show up at work every now and then. Its cool how some of the employees show up even after they’ve moved on. Not long ago (I guess it was Christmas so it was a while ago), we all took off for Ryan’s for the Christmas party. Well, Miriam who worked here her last furlough (she’s a missionary) covered the phones for us! Christian has done that too I believe.

Family buisness

Filed under: Daily Life at Osborne — Mary Beth @ 1:58 pm

One of the things that I have really liked about Osborne Wood Products, Inc. is that it is a family company. Yes, my family is very involved at the shop and we all enjoy our jobs very much. My grandparents are in their 90s and at night they will go and lock up the shop. They pray for the employees every day, for their protection and that God will bless them.

But actually, I was thinking about the guys out in the shop. Its been neat having a core set of employs stay with the company for as long as I can remember. Not just that, but two of them now have sons who work here as well. Tim and his son Noah, and Cal and his son Sam. And guess what! Tim and Cal are brother-in-laws! Talk about family!

And I keep missing Tim’s son Noah since our work schedules are different. But I promise he’s around.

Intern

Filed under: Daily Life at Osborne — Mary Beth @ 3:16 pm

This summer we are enjoying the internship of Ashley. Of coarse we hope she can stay on longer than just the summer. She is studying marketing at Toccoa Falls College and hopes to pursue a carrier in marketing upon graduation. While she is here she is doing the work of a true apprentice. I think we all call it, respectfully, the grunt work!

Thanks Ashley! Glad to have you with us!

Hey! I’m thinking of hay… green pastures, the sweet smell of wood… and Osborne Wood Products, Inc.’s most recent idea for a new corbel! Something is rather horsey about this…

So now wee need feed back. Do you think this is something we should add to our Corbel line?
