Half End with spool

Half End with spool, from the Half Round Onlays line #7200 (10 x 3 1/2)

The Half End with Spool was designed with a specific job in mind. Its goal in life is to show support to one of the Large Half Dowel Moldings in the Osborne Wood Products collection. No other item can perform the task, look as good, or be genuinely right for the part. Have you ever thought about putting two of these on top of the other, top to top? Makes for an intriguing concept that you might consider for your next 'outside the box' project.

10 inch Half End

10 inch Half End, from the Half Round Onlays line #7100 (10 x 2)

When I first saw the 10" Half End start showing up in catalogs about 30 years ago, I thought, "What would you ever use that for?" Well, it didn't take me long to find out. I was creating a masterpiece kitchen (we would never stoop so low now as to say we were building a set of kitchen cabinets. Nooo-we are far too advanced for that.) Ahem, uh, okay, so I was creating this masterpiece kitchen when I looked at the corner units and exclaimed (we never just 'say' either) "What shall I do to make this masterpiece kitchen the envy of every cook in the world?" (I over exaggerate, in case you didn't notice.) Well, here's what I did, I used a 10 inch Half End on the bottom and a Fluted Half Dowel Molding as the column, a Half Spool near the top crowned by a Small Cap Onlay. Wow, did it ever make the kind of impression that I wanted!

Half End

Half End, from the Half Round Onlays line #7201 (10 x 3 1/2)

There are times when just the roundness of the half end is exactly what the doctor ordered, so to speak. Sometimes, the spool atop the Half End with Spool is just too much. So, for those occasions we offer the Half End. Its purpose is to be a support to the column that it finds itself above. With the Half End you can use square columns or half rounds. This versatile base is just the perfect item with which to experiment.

5 1/2 inch Half End

5 1/2 inch Half End, from the Half Round Onlays line #7101 (5 1/2 x 2)

With the advent of half ends to bolster your column look on the face frames of cabinets and cupboards, the 5 1/2 inch Half End offers you the opportunity to buy exactly what you need rather than buying a more expensive unit and then cutting part of it off. This 5 1/2 inch Half End will make your building life easier. It really is such a beautiful piece that you'll want to include it in your next project.

Half Spool

Half Spool, from the Half Round Onlays line #7102 (2 1/2 x 1 7/8)

When I first started cabinetmaking, I didn't have a lathe. And I didn't have Osborne Wood Products to call on way back when. So, when I needed a Half Spool, I would actually take a piece of stock 2x2 square and 3 inches long. I would trace the top of a putty can on the block and then cut out the dowel on the band saw. After a half hour of sanding to get the saw marks off, I would then rig up a jig on my table saw to split it. Next I would have to cut two circles out of stock using a spackle can for the right size and then bad saw again. Next came routing them and all that sanding. Then it was figuring out how to split them properly. Now I had to fasten them together, so I accomplished that with screws. Could it have been any harder? Today it's one simple step. I go online and order the Half Spool #7102 and I can start my project bright and early Monday morning.

Large End Onlay

Large End Onlay, from the Half Round Onlays line #7204 (4 3/4 x 2 1/2)

When all you want to accentuate your dream piece is a good square column, then the cap for that fluted or reeded column might just be the Large End Onlay. Even the most discriminating eyes find this great carving to be the perfect way to top a column. You know, I've said for years that it is easy to convince everyone that you are the finest craftsman on the planet, and without letting on that you had a lot of help from Osborne Wood Products. All you have to do is take a simple bookcase, put some wide stiles on it and grace it with a column made of Osborne Wood Products Reeded Molding, and then top it with the Large End Onlay.

Half Beaded Onlay

Half Beaded Onlay, from the Half Round Onlays line #7210 (3 1/4 x 3 1/8)

It was a party like no other, on the Upper East Side. I could look out our window and see the line of limos picking up the stars as they went to their evening commitments. This apartment was great, but it had something that others I had seen didn't. It had a sense of contemporary style, a taste of nouveau. A feel of pizzazz. The look of old world meets urban culture. I noticed on the unit that housed the plasma TV a strange column. They had actually used Osborne Wood Products' Half-Beaded Onlay to sandwich in a Reeded Half Round Molding. It was magic. Flutes and curves going both directions. I made a point of putting that in the memory bank for later, when I got back to the country and to the workshop.

Small Cap Onlay

Small Cap Onlay, from the Half Round Onlays line #7103 (2 3/4 x 2 1/4 x 1)

When combined with the Half Spool or the Half Ends, and a fluted or reeded half dowel, the Small Cap Onlay helps to make the some of the most ornate columns you will ever see. It is just the simple combination of several of these components that makes the difference. But, the common denominator is the Small Cap Onlay. The detailed carving with the sheer beauty of this piece make it one of the most versatile items in the Osborne Wood Products catalog.

Half Splice Onlay

Half Splice Onlay, from the Half Round Onlays line #7211 (3 1/4 x 3 1/8)

Here's a way to break up those long expanses of half dowel. It's the Half Splice Onlay. This fine component is just the thing for bridging two pieces of half dowel together. Not only does it provide the means in which to accomplish this, but it also adds a certain flair and beauty to the overall piece. I know that I've been looking for something to make this transition smooth for years. Thank goodness we have Osborne Wood Products to thank for this most necessary piece.

Half Squat Onlay

This question comes up all the time: "What do I do to begin a column if i don't want to use a traditional base block?" Well, Osborne Wood Products has the answer! Here's the solution: you use the Half Squat Onlay. This onlay is exactly what you need to accomplish the task. No need to do a full blown base and half spool onlay if you're trying to achieve a more dainty and discerning appearance to the piece. Just start the column with our half Squat Onlay.

Half Finial Onlay

Half Finial Onlay, from the Half Round Onlays line #7214 (5 x 3 1/4)

So many of you have begged us to offer something that was not as bulky to top out our Half Dowel Moldings, and we've listened. You've gotten tired of using the Large Cap Onlay for every column you construct on a piece of furniture. So, we have introduced the Half Finial Onlay. If you choose to use the Half Finial Onlay on the top and the Half Squat Onlay on the bottom, then you truly have achieved a sleeker, daintier, smoother look. Throw tradition to the wind; it is the dawning of a new day!
