Osborne Builder's Studio: Coat Rack with Shelf

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1
Mill down the top and backboard of the coat rack to a thickness of 1” using a planer or a joiner. If you do not have a joiner or planer, use Osborne’s 4x1 True Stock Lumber for your project.
Step 2
Determine the length for the top shelf. Use corbels as an estimate to give a proper overhang. We created a 24” long top shelf. Cut the top shelf to length.
Step 3
Mark 1” from each edge of the shelf to allow for overhang.
Step 4
Place the corbels in their proper location. Measure the distance between the corbels to determine the length for the middle backboard. We cut the backboard to 18 ⅜”. This may vary depending on the width of the corbel that is chosen.
Step 5
Rip the backboard to a total width of 4” using a table saw.
Step 6
Now that all of the pieces are cut to final size, sand and prep the surfaces.
Step 7
Attach the top shelf to the corbels. Pre-drill with a 2-step bit into the top side of the shelf board. Mark out locations of the screws to ensure they land in the middle of the corbels. Drill the marked locations.
Step 8
Create wood plugs using a scrap piece of white oak using a plug cutting bit with a drill press or hand drill. Place wood plugs into drill holes. Let dry and move to the backboard to mount the hooks.
Step 9
Create a line across the backboard to ensure the coat hooks are at the same height.
Step 10
Determine the spacing between each hook. We placed our hooks 5” apart. Use a small drill bit and hammer to mark out the location for each screw. Use a small drill bit and pre-drill each screw location.
Step 11
Install pocket holes on the backside of the backboard. This will allow us to attach it to our corbels.
Step 12
Attach the backboard to the corbels using the pre-drilled pocket holes.
Step 13
Sand any rough areas to 150 grit.
Step 14
Apply a wood finish of your desire.
Step 15
Install the coat hooks on the backboard using a screw driver. Once the hardware is installed, you can attach the assembly to a wall using the keyhole brackets on the back side of the corbels.
