Custom Game Table Features Square Table Legs from Osborne

Coffee, End, Dining Table LegsGallery

Our friend Eric created a beautiful gaming coffee table as a Christmas gift for his daughter. Eric was kind enough to not only share some photos, but how he put the table together. Eric chose the 18″ Square Coffee Table Leg (Part #2180002500). He chose Red Oak wood specifically for this project.

Today, I’d like to give you a look at how this stunning game table was created. While you read, I hope you get some great ideas for your next custom design! Eric told us that he made up these plans on his own. If he were making another table there are some improvements that he would make. What do you think? What would you have done the same? or differently? Take a look:

“The coffee table will have a recessed area underneath the surface where game boards or miniatures can be placed while playing a game. When you need to pause, simply replace the top to keep the board undisturbed and out of sight.”

“The slots will contain “buttons” that can be pushed from underneath to raise one of the two table top sections enough to grab hold of them so they can be lifted off. The buttons
worked, but there are some improvements that can be made with them. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was solved a different way already, I just couldn’t something I liked when researching.”

Here you can see the table top, as well as the playing area with the buttons in place:

“I thought it would be fun to have the maps of Middle Earth on the underside of the table tops. It is a gaming table, right? I used Mod Podge (4 coats) with a final coat of polyurethane. I’m not pleased with the surface the Mod Podge left (sanding didn’t help much and I didn’t want to accidentally damage the map) and if I were to do this in the future, I’d probably only use it to adhere the cloth to the wood and then just use polyurethane for all remaining finish coats.”

And finally, here is the finished table! What a beautifully handcrafted piece!

As you can see, Eric’s gaming table turned out beautifully! Great work Eric. I’m sure your daughter loves her new gaming coffee table!

Were you inspired by this game table design? Have you created your own custom table? We would love to see your project! Be sure to share your project your photos and we’ll feature them right here on our blog!
