Assembly Instructions

Step 1 - Gather materials

For this project, we grabbed an 8 ft pine project panel and plywood from a local hardware store. Our pet bed is roughly 2 feet x 3 feet in order to fit a medium-sized pet.

Step 2 - Cut materials to size

Cut two sides of the panel at 24” and one side at 36”. This will help to make your overall box. Adjusting this is easy to accommodate smaller or larger pets.

Step 3 - Secure the side panels

Once the panel is cut, you can get a rough idea of the shape of the pet bed. To secure the side panels, pre-drill into each side and add a wood screw. Brad nails, miter joints or pocket holes could also be used for this step.

Tip: You can fill any pre-drilled holes with wood putty before finishing to hide screws.

Step 4 - Cut the plywood bottom

The plywood bottom can now be cut. It should be the exact size of the interior space of the box. Be sure to take a final measurement before cutting.

Step 5 - Remove any harsh edges

Use a finish sander to remove any harsh edges from cutting. Test fit the plywood bottom into the box making sure there are no visible gaps.

Step 6 - Attach the bottom panel

To attach the bottom panel, use a similar process as you did with the side panels. First, add a wood clamp to the front of the box to keep everything together and then pre-drill through both pieces to avoid cracking or splitting when inserting a screw.

Tip: Depending on the thickness of your lumber, it’s important to use a proper length screw as well as making sure that the screw is going straight into the plywood.

Step 7 - Work on the front of the box

Next, you can work on the front of the box. We added edge banding to hide the ingrain in the plywood and to create a more uniform look. Our edge banding features a pre-glued backing that can be heated up and applied to various surfaces. An in-depth tutorial for applying edge banding can be accessed here.

Step 8 - Add feet and a cushion

Now you can install furniture feet to the bottom of the box to elevate it off the ground. We chose a set of four rams horn feet. These can be screwed directly to any wooden surface. We installed them on the very edge of the box with the included wood screws so they are easily visible. You may need to select a different screw depending on the thickness of your material. Finally, choose a cushion(s) for the bed to add comfort to the design.
