Take measurements on the wall where the accent panel will go. Make sure to account for fixtures (such as TV mounts, outlets, etc.).
Measure and cut the tambour panels to their final height with a miter saw or circular saw.
Once you have determined the final length your panels need to be, you can transfer those marks to all of your panels and cut them to appropriate size.
After trimming the panels, it is important to roll them up with the flexible backing to allow for proper wood expansion. This movement separates the decorative slats just slightly and allows for a more effective installation.
If the backing is frayed from the saw cuts, you can use a sander to get rid of those prior to installation.
Now that you have all panels cut to size, lay them next to each other and mark where any cutouts need to be for your fixtures. Make sure to allow for a small amount of extra spacing on each side of your cutouts to avoid interference over time.
We recommend using a straight edge to help create your guide for the cutouts. This will keep all cuts square and aid with alignment during installation.
Once all marks have been made, clamp the panel to a work surface and use a jigsaw to create the necessary cutouts.
Use a sander if desired to smooth the freshly cut edges.
Apply the finish of your choice to the tambour panels. We used a satin polyurethane finish and applied it with a rag on the top side and a foam brush for the slats.
Take a final measurement of the panels compared to the wall before attachment.
To secure the panel to the wall, you can use a construction adhesive by adding a thin bead around the border of the back fabric and applying a sufficient amount in the center of that border.
Align your first panel to the marks on the wall and firmly press the panel in order to set the adhesive.
Then, use a pin nailer or finish nailer to temporarily hold the panel in place while the adhesive continues to set.
When installing two panels side-by-side, it is important to leave a small gap in between them to allow for wood expansion over time. We recommend using two playing cards as a guide for the thickness of the gap.
