Builder's StudioHow To

In this video we show you how to build a DIY Nightstand Organizer Valet using Osborne's 4x1 S4S Project Lumber! We chose Mahogany for this project as it is very easy to work with but still a beautiful premium wood species.

Assembly Instructions

Overall Dimensions:

12” x 8” x 10”

What we used:

4x1 True Stock s4s Lumber in Mahogany (Part #39641)

Other Items Needed:

Miter Saw

PlanerRound Over BitBrad Nailer
Wood Glue

Sander

Rubio Monocoat Pure
Mineral SpiritsWood ClampsRuler/Tape Measure

Instructions:

Step 1

Cut two 12” pieces for the base using Osborne’s 4x1 True Stock s4s Lumber (Part #39641). Add wood glue to the edges to secure them together creating a 12” x 8” base. Clamp the pieces together while it dries.

Step 2

Cut two pieces of lumber to use for the watch holder. The size of this piece is customizable to fit your needs. Glue the pieces on top of each other, so there is a thicker width to shape later. Clamp the pieces together while they dry.

Step 3

After the base dries, be sure to remove as much excess glue as possible. Run the base through the planer to ensure the seam between each board is flush and excess glue is removed.

Step 4

Add a full round over on the top and bottom edges to give it a softer look. We did this using our router table and large round over bit.

Step 5

Sand the base to 150 grit.

Step 6

Trim a square side on the watch holder using a table saw. Rip it down to a final width of 1 ½”.

Step 7

Add a round over to all four sides of the watch holder, similar to the base of the organizer valet.

Step 8

Cut the watch holder to the final length. The final dimension for our watch holder was 1 ½” x 2” x 4”.

Step 9

Find the angle you want the center stand to sit at. We cut it at a 15° angle. Cut the stand to a height of 9”.

Step 10

Rip the stand to a final width of 3”. Apply the same roundover to all edges.

Step 11

Plane down the phone holder to a thickness of ½”, so it is not too heavy. Cut to length at 7”.

Step 12

Cut a ½” piece to use as the support for the phone.

Step 13

Sand the phone stand to 150 grit. Attach the phone support to the bottom of the holder using a small amount of wood glue. Let it dry.

Step 14

Use wood glue to secure the watch holder to the center stand. Clamp the pieces together and let it dry.

Tip: The placement of this piece is customizable.

Step 15

Glue the phone holder to the center stand. Be sure to use a small amount of wood glue, as it will be difficult to remove the glue squeeze out.

Step 16

Find the center of the base and determine how far back you would like the stand to sit. Apply wood glue to the bottom of the stand and secure it to the base.

Step 17

Use a brad nailer to hold it in place as it dries.

Step 18

Before applying the Rubio finish, wipe down the surface with mineral spirits to remove any dust. Mix up the finish and apply a small amount to the surface. Spread evenly across the wood grain.

Step 19

Once the finish is applied, buff out as much as possible from the surface before letting it cure.
