Osborne Builder's Studio: Using Z-Clip Table Top Fasteners

Builder's StudioHow To

In this episode of Builder's Studio, we are showing you 2 methods for installing Z-Clip Table Top Fasteners. Z-Clips are a great option for table top attachment as they allow for extra seasonal wood movement as your table expands and contracts. Once a channel has been cut into your table skirt, one end of the Z-Clip will screw into your top while the other floats in the recessed groove. This allows the table top to expand or contract freely without interference while still staying secure to your base.

Instructions

Dimensions: 1 ⅛" × ½" × ⅝"

What we used:

Note: Each pack of 16 fasteners will include the required installation screws for attachment to your table top.

Other items needed:

  • Table Saw or Biscuit Joiner

  • Push Stick

  • Drill

Table Saw Method:

Step 1

Measure the distance from the bottom edge of the skirt board where the fastener meets the table top. After measuring, we marked ⅜” from the bottom of the board.

Step 2

Once marks are made on the face of the board, transfer the marks to the inside portion of the skirt board, so you can line it up with your table saw blade.

Step 3

Remove the riving knife from the table saw blade to allow for a shallow pass through the wood. Set the height of the blade to ¼” to allow for proper depth in the skirt.

Step 4

Set the blade to the right side of the mark. Make the cut.

Step 5

When the channel is cut in the skirt board, the Z-Clip Fasteners should slide easily across the cut.

Biscuit Joint Method:

Step 1

Mark ⅜” from the bottom edge of the skirt board where the fastener meets the table top.

Step 2

Biscuit Joiners have a reference mark on the tool for the cutting location of the blade. Line this reference point up above the mark you made for your measurement. Make the cut to make the slot for the Z-Clip Table Top Fastener.

Tip: It is a good rule of thumb to install a z-clip every 6-8 inches depending on the size of your table.

Attaching Table Base & Table Top:

Step 1

Make sure the table base is centered on your table top with the proper overhang

Step 2

Install the z-clip fasteners into the channels that were created on the skirt boards. Make sure the side with the screw hole is touching the table top.

Step 3

Install the z-clip fasteners by screwing them into the table top.
