Osborne Builder's Studio: Floating Shelf Build
In this episode of Builder's Studio, Tim explains how to create a beautiful floating shelf with the Floating Shelf Bracket (Part #89181) hardware from Osborne Wood Products. Whether you need a simple shelf in your workspace or several shelves within your living area, this hardware is a great option. The bracket supports a shelf while remaining hidden which makes the shelf appear to be floating on the wall's surface. We also offer other shelving solutions depending on your preference.
Assembly Instructions
Overall Dimensions: 25 ½” x 11” x 3 ⅛”
Materials Used:
Floating Shelf Bracket (Part #89181) - bolts included
Lumber cut-to-size (we used pine shelving board at 3/4" thick and 11” wide)
Wood glue
Tape measure
Drill
Nailer
Instructions:
Step 1 - Create shelf pieces
You will want to make your floating shelf box wider and taller than your shelf bracket. The shelf bracket measures 7 7/8” x 22 1/2” x 1 13/20”.
Create top and bottom shelf pieces that are large enough to accommodate the bracket.
Cut pieces for a front panel and two side panels. The back of the shelf will sit open against the wall.
Step 2 - Add glue and secure the shelving box
Once you have all of your cuts made, apply a bead of glue to all of the joints and secure the shelving box together with a nailer.
Step 3 - Add the shelving bracket
The shelving bracket should now slide right into the shelf box you created. Ensure the fit is correct before attaching the bracket to your wall.
Step 4 - Find wall studs and attach bracket
It is very important that you secure the shelf bracket into wall studs using the included bolts. This will ensure the weight support and durability of the shelf.
Step 5 - Sand and finish the shelf
Next, sand and finish your shelf however you choose.
Step 6 - Add the shelf to the bracket
Finally, slide the shelf onto the shelf bracket which is already attached to the wall.
