Ambrosia (Wormy) Maple Table Has Dramatic Striping
Osborne is really proud to have had a role in creating this dramatic table, made by Designable, our customer in Guilford, CT. They sent us several blanks of Ambrosia maple so that we could turn four of our Cabriole Dining Table Legs (Part #1190) for them. Especially when combined with the gorgeous ambrosia maple table top, the effect is just stunning! If you are a little curious about Ambrosia maple, then read on~
Ambrosia Maple is also known as wormy maple, and is used to describe a variety of Acer (soft maple) species that have color bug trails throughout the board. Ambrosia maple gets it’s unique grain pattern from impregnated Ambrosia Beetles that burrow into maple trees to deposit larvae. The beetles carry fungi on their feet into the maple wood, which serves as food for the offspring when they hatch. The residue left behind as the beetle digs into the maple tree causes the discoloration and worm holes in the wood. These trails are bluish or green, and give the wood a lot of character once it’s finished. You can see why this wood is so highly valued!
The wormholes are not a concern for finished pieces. Just about any lumber you buy from a supplier is kiln dried, so the bugs that created the designs in the wood will not be an issue.
If you have a unique wood that you would like to make into some table legs, just give Osborne a call and we can arrange to receive your wood and give you a quote to fashion the wood into the design of your choice. This custom creation was a real treat for our Production crew, and we are so excited how beautifully the table turned out.
