Historically the escutcheon was used to refer to an area on which armorial bearings, usually that of a shield, would show a coat of arms. Etymologically, this word found its way into the designer's world used today when referencing a protective or ornamental plate most often used for keyholes or to cover bolt ends. This piece is intended for ornamental purposes only.
