Metal Corbels and Brackets

metal corbels and bracketsOsborne Wood Products, Inc. is proud to introduce a line of metal corbels and brackets for you to consider. These simple yet elegant corbels are perfect for cabinets, bars, mantles, or even shelving and they mix and blend beautifully with our other products. The thoughtful inclusion of metal adds sophistication, style and exceptional character to cabinet work. Our initial offering includes the Antique Chelsea that features a light scrolling that is reminiscent of the metalwork associated with nineteenth century Italianate pieces. Our Lincolnshire design is a hefty piece that would blend well with work that includes our heavier turned wood products. Our Florentine scroll combines simplicity and movement with a single stylized "S" turn. Metal Corbels and Brackets accent Kitchen Island Corbels beautifully as well as providing a complimentary contrast to any of our turned wood products.

Traditional Corbels and Brackets

Traditional Wood Corbels and BracketsThe earliest use of corbels and brackets was purely structural. Examples are found all over Europe of medieval and pre-medieval uses of simple unadorned corbels serving as supports at the point where exposed ceiling beams met the interior walls. Another use is that of oversized support for balconies - particularly as used in Italy during the Renaissance. By the time of the Renaissance, simplicity had given way to adornment however and the quiet beauty and strength of the essential corbel was hidden beneath carvings and polychrome finishes. Our line of traditional brackets harkens back to the earlier period and reflects simplicity and purity in design. The range of designs includes the simple geometry of a half-circle arc, an elongated "S" - and some light interpretations of the time honored and quickly recognizable ogee shape. These are being offered from a selection of nine of our most popular wood types.

Classic Corbels

Classic Carved CorbelsThe Classic Corbel selection at Osborne Wood Products consists of a variety of traditionally carved brackets. There are several size options within this line including cabinet height and bar height corbels. The subtle beauty of these carved corbels lends well to a wide range of kitchen designs. These brackets are used in various applications such as countertop supports, range hoods, shelving, or under an upper cabinet. Our Classic Corbels are offered in ten wood types including Cherry, Walnut, Mahogany, and many others.

Acanthus Leaf Corbels

Acanthus Leaf CorbelsAmong the oldest decorative designs on earth, it is difficult to find anything that is more classical than the acanthus leaf pattern. As appreciated today as it was in ancient Greece, the popularity of the acanthus pattern has ebbed and flowed over the centuries but at no point has it ever been entirely out of favor. Osborne Wood Products' Acanthus Leaf Collection of corbels represents a recognition and high regard for this timeless design. Our corbels that incorporate hand carved acanthus leaf elements will make the perfect addition to the design of a classic tasteful kitchen. These corbels are available in ten wood types in order to accommodate your design needs.

Mission Corbels

mission corbelsThe uncluttered and simple shape of a mission corbel can add just the right amount of detail to a kitchen. The Mission Corbel line at Osborne Wood Products has been developed with the Spanish origins of the mission style in mind. A corbel in this line reflects that simple minimalist style, which can be used either in a rustic cabin like design, or a more modern design. Available in numerous wood types and sizes, the mission corbels make an impression that is confident, but not overstated. Mission Corbels are also part of Osborne's Mission Style Collection which features other components exhibiting the mission style.

Basket Weave Corbels

Basket Weave CorbelsThe woven design on our Basket Weave Corbels conveys a touch of detail, while still embodying the Country Home Style. These corbels make themselves at home with Hoosier hutches, rustic pine tables, open cabinets with pullout baskets, along with many other adornments. Each corbel is hand carved, and includes the perfect amount of basket weave which blends architectural sophistication with a warm invitation to linger. The basket weave design is also offered in different componants such as legs, appliques, and moldings.

About Decorative Corbels and Brackets

Corbels have long been an integral part of architecture. Throughout the centuries, these subtle and yet very strong architectural components lend their support to extruding surfaces, giving these surfaces the much needed ability to bear weight. Corbels get their name from the Old French word based on the Latin "corvellus." Corvellus is Latin for "raven," which indicates that corbels are named for their beak-like shape.

While these much needed components were originally made from concrete or stone, the Victorian Era ushered in the concept of wooden corbels. Able to be made much smaller than their stone counterparts, this allowed for the use of corbels to spread from the libraries and cathedrals, into smaller community buildings and even an individual's home, while allowing for another transition. Originally, corbels were primarily a creature of function. Though often still made with artistry in mind, they were mainly an invention born of necessity. With the advent of wooden corbels, design became a primary feature. Instead of structural corbels that were also decorative, the focus changed. Now corbels were seen as mainly decorative, though also structural.

Decorative wood corbels offer a tremendous versatility in design, with myriad possibilities for both the style of the carving and the subject itself. From corbels featuring lifelike characters such as an angel, a horse, or even a serene but stately lion, to more classic designs resembling a still life - a cluster of grapes or a delicately carved leaf; Osborne Wood Products is sure to carry a decorative corbel perfectly suited to your next project. Also available in the realm of decorative corbels are metal corbels. With sleek design and uniquely intriguing shape, metal corbels offer a decorative touch perfectly suited to accenting stone, concrete, granite, and even many types of wood.

As for decorative wood brackets or corbels, perhaps one of the broadest genres carried at Osborne Wood Products is Greco-Roman. Though specific designs may vary slightly; the same basic scrolling pattern from the widest part to the narrowest ties these many designs together. Whether acanthus leaf detail, lush clusters of grapes, an intricate basket weave, or even the sleek and simple classic design; the overarching shape brings a unity to corbels even so diverse in style as these. Even many of the corbels that do not fall into one of these specific design categories still bear the overall shape that pays homage to perhaps one of the most influential eras of design history.

Still another set of styles are more modern. From the Contemporary Wood Brackets to the rustic Mission corbels, simple and clean lines are the distinctive feature. With distinctly modern selections such as the Chesapeake corbels, and turn of the century styles such as the Traditional Bracket; even in this seemingly simple category there is much to choose from. Adding artistic corbels such as the aforementioned Angel Corbel to the selection, and it is clear that Osborne Wood Products is a cut above the rest when it comes to offering a diverse and high quality selection of beautiful hand carved corbels.

As with all of our products, you offer these in a broad range of wood types to accomodate your needs so you can order anything from maple brackets for a lighter grain or oak corbels for heavier graining. It's all available for you to choose.
