Builder's Studio: Create Your Own Table Base Kit
In this special edition of the Builder's Studio, Jeremy walks us through the process of building a beautiful craft table as a Christmas gift. He already had a table top on hand but needed to create a base for the top. By using Osborne's custom table base creator, he was able to purchase his preferred legs and apron components in no time.
We offer these custom table base kits for a wide selection of our table legs. Find the leg you want and select "Add to Table Base Kit" under the "Add to Cart" button on the product page to begin the customization process. You will be able to choose the type of apron, wood species and profile. You will also be asked to enter the dimension and desired overhang for your table top. Please note: table tops are not included in the table base kit. We do offer table tops separately, as well as full table kits that are ready for finishing and assembly.
Instructions
Step 1 - Order Custom Table Base Kit
Head to the Osborne Wood Products website, at www.osbornewood.com
Select ‘Customization’ on the menu at the top of the home screen.
From the drop down, click ‘Custom Table Base Kits’.
From this screen, you need to ‘Find a Table Leg’. There are a number of different options and styles to choose from. Once you have your desired leg, pick the wood species and select ‘Add to Table Base Kit’.
Determine what size of table skirt you would like. Pick the correct wood species and wood profile.
Enter the table top dimensions (table top is not included).
Add the table base kit to the cart.
Step 2 - Assemble the long skirt boards
To begin, assemble the two longest rails in the kit using the pre-cut mortise and tenon joinery. Apply glue to the mortise and tenon joinery on the long skirt boards (optional). Screw the table legs and skirt boards together, utilizing the pre-cut pocket holes and supplied screws.
Step 3 - Add the short skirt boards
Once the longer halves of the table base have been assembled, connect them together using the two shorter skirt boards. Connect the two halves using a screw into the pre-installed pocket holes.
Step 4 - Install corner blocks
Install the corner blocks by adding the provided bolt and washer into the pre-installed threaded insert of the corner block. This adds greater stability to the table kit.
Step 5 - Tighten the bolt
Take a ½” wrench and snug the bolt down.
Step 6 - Secure corner blocks
Secure the corner blocks by installing the supplied screws into the pre-drilled holes in the corner block
Step 7 - Center base on table top
Place the table top upside down to center the base and measure for the proper overhang.
Step 8 - Add screws
Add screws into the pre-installed pocket holes to secure the table top to the table base.
