Figure Eight Fasteners are an alternative to pocket holes when completing a table assembly. While pocket holes are valid methods of table attachment, these fasteners allow for movement of the tabletop for those expecting possible expansion. This slight movement can prevent splitting, cracking or warping as the wood changes due to the climate surrounding it.
These fasteners are shaped like a figure eight and include holes on either end for screws (not included - it is recommend to use #6 flat head screws for this assembly). The fastener is 1 5/16" long and 3/4" wide at the largest diameter. To install, you will need a 3/4" Forstner bit to create a flat bottomed recess where the fastener will be attached. Be sure to set your depth to be slightly deeper than the thickness of the fastener (1/8") so that movement remains possible.
